Stena Line to move Europoort-Killingholme to Immingham

On account of increased demand for unaccompanied trailer shipments, Stena Line has reviewed its Europoort (Rotterdam)-Killingholme operations, moving its Humber operations for this specific service from Killingholme to nearby Immingham come 2022.
MSC Group launches luxury cruise brand - construction of first 461-suite ship already started

MSC Group is tapping into the luxury cruise market following the launching of a new brand known as Explora Journeys. Aimed at the next-generation of discerning luxury travellers, Explora Journeys will introduce four purpose-designed luxury cruise vessels to be delivered by Italian builders Fincantieri in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. In fact, construction of the lead ship, the 63,900gt EXPLORA I, already commenced today, 10 June, following first steel cutting at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard.
Fourth Island Class for BC Ferries Canada-bound

Only three weeks after the yet unnamed third hybrid diesel-electric Island Class, ISLAND 3, left Damen Shipyards in Romania, sister ship ISLAND 4 has now sailed from Galatz to Point Hope Maritime in Victoria, B.C., a 10,700-nautical-mile voyage that will take approximately 60 days.

With Trasmediterránea’s Balearic Islands activities now in the hands of Grimaldi Group, Trasmed Grimaldi Logística España (GLE) will increase its footprint in the Balearic trade this summer with the introduction of Grimaldi Lines’ 1994-built EUROFERRY EGNAZIA.
Seventh Yangfan-built PCTC joins Grimaldi Lines fleet

Yangfan shipyard in Zhoushan, China has delivered GRANDE CALIFORNIA, the last PCTC in a series of seven sister ships built for Grimaldi Group’s weekly Mediterranean-North America (Canada, US and Mexico) service, which also includes a call at the group’s Antwerp Euroterminal (AET) hub.
Sedef Shipyard delivers the full-electric MALMEFJORD to Boreal

Sedef Shipyard has handed over the 107m long and 18m beam double-ended ferry MALMEFJORD to Norwegian fjord ferry operator Boreal. The first in a line of three full-electric sister ships built by the Turkish shipbuilder for Boreal, MALMEFJORD has a capacity of 399 passengers and 120 cars.

Fjord1 has signed a contract with Tersan Shipyard of Turkey to build two 84m long and 16.3m double-ended ferries, each with a capacity of 248 persons, 80 cars and six trucks.
Morocco shuts out Spain from 2021 OPE

A year ago, the Moroccan government announced that there would be no OPE 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions. The OPE – Operación Paso del Estrecho/The crossing of the Strait (of Gibraltar), is the name given to the season of very heavy passenger and vehicle traffic travelling from Europe to Morocco and Algeria in June and July, with the subsequent return in August and early September.
Corsica Ferries to operate ICHNUSA between Corsica and Sardinia

In an unexpected move, BluNavy sold the 1986-built, 350-passenger and 50-car capacity ro-pax ICHNUSA to Genova Trasporti Marittimi (GTM) during the last hours of May. GTM is a 50:50 joint venture between two Genoa-based companies: Finsea Group and shipyard San Giorgio del Porto, part of the Genova Industrie Navali (GIN) Group which also includes the T. Mariotti shipyard.
Grimaldi Group takes delivery of fifth hybrid mega ro-ro

The fifth GG5G Class hybrid mega ro-ro is set to join the Grimaldi Lines fleet in the Mediterranean following its 4 June delivery by Chinese builders Jinling in Nanjing. Part of the innovative twelve-ship GG5G series, the 238m long and 34m beam ECO CATANIA will be slotted into Grimaldi's north-south MoS connecting Genoa, Livorno and Salerno to Catania and Valletta.

Construction kicks off on world’s first zero-emission fast ferry

Partners in the TrAM (Transport – Advanced and Modular) project are excited to announce that construction has commenced on the world’s first fully electric passenger fast ferry at the Fjellstrand shipyard on the west coast of Norway.
Equipped to carry around 150 passengers, the catamaran vessel will be 31 metres long with a nine-metre beam. It will be equipped with two electric motors and a 1.5MWh capacity battery with charging power of more than 2MW.

The delivery of the world's largest fast ferry to Bornholm is delayed. EXPRESS 5 is now expected to be delivered from the yard at the end of 2022, Austal has announced.
P&O Ferrymasters builds new 10,000 square metre warehouse at Genk to offer port-centric logistics solutions
P&O Ferrymasters announced it has entered into an agreement with Genk Green Logistics to build a 10,000 square metre state-of-the-art warehouse near the Port of Genk, further enhancing its pan-European rail, road and warehousing network at a critical time for international trade and the economic recovery.

Following an re-start of voyages in Alaska and Galapagos, the momentum continued for Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc. as they celebrated the float out of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC RESOLUTION in Ulstein Verft, Norway on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. Sister vessel to the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENDURANCE delivered in 2020, she is the second polar new build for the line.
Premiere for AURORA BOTNIA out at sea – the first sea trial assessed the performance of the world's most environmentally friendly car and passenger ferry

The car and passenger ferry AURORA BOTNIA is nearing the end of the construction phase at Rauma Marine Constructions’ shipyard in Rauma, Finland, and has successfully completed its first sea trial. The ship's performance was tested over a three-day period under the attendance and supervision of RMC, representatives from Wasaline, the buyer of the ship, and equipment manufacturers.
DFDS: May volume report: freight up 31% following lockdowns in 2020
Ferry – freight: Total volumes in May 2021 were 31.2% above 2020. Net adjustments for structural route changes reduced growth 3.2 ppt to 28.0%.
The extraordinary volume growth in May 2021 vs 2020 reflected a recovery from the significant volume reductions in May 2020 caused by Covid-19 related lockdowns. Volumes in May 2021 were 7.4% above May 2019 adjusted for structural route changes.
Volumes were above May 2019 in each of the four business units mainly carrying freight, i.e. North Sea, Baltic Sea, Channel and Mediterranean. Trading between the EU and the UK continued to be robust.
Ferry – passenger: The total number of passengers in May 2021 was 27.3% below 2020 reflecting the continued tight travel restrictions.

AIDA Cruises today announced it continues its gradual restart with another cruise ship, AIDASTELLA, resuming holiday voyages from July 29, 2021. The ship will operate as originally planned with 10- and 11-day cruises from Palma de Mallorca with calls in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Malta. There is a wide choice of travel dates until the end of October.
The procurement of a new ferry to help support the community and economy on Islay is officially underway.
The first stage of the tender process will assess if interested shipyards meet the technical and financial criteria to take on the project.
The Invitation To Tender is expected to be issued later this summer with a view to awarding the contract, with an estimated value of around £50m, in March 2022.
Wärtsilä Voyage has this month completed an extensive upgrade of the Croatian National Vessel Traffic Management & Information System (VTMIS) with new Sea Traffic Management (STM) functionality.
Completion of this project confirms what has become the first STM installation in the Adriatic Sea. The customer, the Croatian Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, is now able to test the STM functionality throughout Croatian waters together with vessels which will also become STM-compliant as part of this contract.

Energy storage experts Sterling PlanB and Europe’s largest independent ship design group, ICE, have announced an agreement to combine knowledge and resources in order to increase the adoption of energy storage systems (ESS) and thereby accelerate the maritime industry’s energy transition.
DOVER SEAWAYS upgraded to optimise fuel use
DFDS's short-term climate action plan is to reduce emissions by 45 % from 2008 to 2030. The main focus is on upgrading existing vessels.They recently upgraded and rebuilt DOVER SEAWAYS' propulsion and control system. The goal is fuel savings.
Viking Line is holding a competition that is open to all and is looking for video or animated art for the Torget, the central meeting place on Viking Line’s new flagship, VIKING GLORY. The competition runs from June 8 to July 31, 2021. People can compete individually or in a group. The eye-catching feature in the Torget consists of a gigantic LED screen that stretches across two storeys of the vessel. The company is now looking for an artistic vision featuring a sea or archipelago theme for this Motion Wall.
Carnival Cruise Line Confirms Plans For July Restart
Carnival Cruise Line today confirmed its plans to return to guest operations from Port of Galveston on July 3 with CARNIVAL VISTA, followed by the return of operations on CARNIVAL BREEZE on July 15.
These cruises are available for guests who have received their final dose of a CDC-approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise and have proof of vaccination, in accordance with current guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Contract awarded for concept design of emissons-free ferry
The journey to build Europe’s first sea-going vehicle and passenger ferry powered by hydrogen fuel cells which store energy from renewable sources took a step forward with the award of a commercial contract to develop a design concept for the innovative vessel.
The contract has been awarded to Aqualisbraemar LOC Group by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), one of the partners in the EU-funded HySeas III programme. The consortium also includes the University of St Andrew’s and Orkney Islands Council, alongside several European organisations.

CONDOR’s newest member of the fleet, CONDOR VOYAGER, has arrived in Poole to begin mooring trials and familiarisation training for Condor’s crews and port staff, prior to entry into service later this summer.
RINA: First quarter results in line with forecasts
RINA, multinational inspection, certification and engineering consultancy company, confirms the positive trend of its results in the current year.
In the first quarter of 2021 the group recorded revenues of approximately 121 million euros, in line with budget and despite a scenario with still some uncertainties and complexities.
AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for May 2021
In May 2021 AS Tallink Grupp transported 124 470 passengers, which is an 64.8% increase compared to May 2020. The number of cargo units increased by 7.3% to 31 057 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 72.7% to 40 500 units in the same comparison.
Ports of Stockholm to invest in new cruise ship quay
Ports of Stockholm is one of the world’s largest passenger ports. A EUR 1,5 million investment to create a new cruise quay is now planned, which will double the capacity for cruise ships. The investment will begin in 2021 and the quay will be fully operational for the 2023 cruise season.
