EC launches in-depth investigation into Corsica’s public ferry service contracts

In a press release dated 28 February, the European Commission announced it had launched an in-depth investigation to determine whether the public service delegation contracts for maritime services to Corsica awarded in June 2019 were in line with EU state aid rules.

The latest Baleària ro-pax to undergo conversion to dual fuel LNG/diesel operation, the 2002-built, 24,409gt SICILIA arrived at Portugal’s West Sea Viana Shipyard, in Viana do Castelo on 27 February. The work programme will take four months to complete.

Brittany Ferries today (28 February) inaugurated its new Ireland to northern Spain service between Rosslare and Bilbao, which has replaced the previous Cork-Santander route as the company’s key freight route from Ireland to Europe.

Strong 2019 results for Irish Continental Group

Irish Continental Group grew its revenue with 8.2% to EUR 357.4 million in 2019, of which the ferry division stood for EUR 212.4 million (+8.3%). Post IFR16 EBITDA for the group increased by 26.9% to EUR 86.8 million, of which the ferry division stood for EUR 67.2 million (+25.3%).

Green light for RoRo-expansion in Port of Karlshamn

Port of Karlshamn now got clearance from the Environmental Court to launch the next big expansion Project. A completely new 3:rd RoRo-berth with adjustable ramp for 230 m long ferries, widening of RoRo-berth no. 2 and dredging. The main Port gate will be reallocated and line-up areas for accompanied traffic will be expanded. Planning and preparations are already going on, but now procurement deals may be signed and the Construction work can start. The investment which is in the region of 20 Mio Euro shall be completed in 2021.

State aid: Commission clears public support for several ferry services in Italy; finds other measures to the former Tirrenia Group to be incompatible aid

The European Commission has concluded that the public service compensation granted since 2009 to Tirrenia di Navigazione (‘Tirrenia') and later to its acquirer Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione (‘CIN') for the operation of ferry services in Italy is in line with EU State aid rules. However, it found that other measures in favour of Tirrenia are incompatible with EU State aid rules.

SCHOTTEL to supply medium-sized EcoPellers® to Norled

SCHOTTEL has won a contract from Ada Shipyard in Turkey to supply propulsion units for two double-ended Ro-Pax ferries. As part of the deal, the German propulsion manufacturer will provide a total of four SCHOTTEL Rudder EcoPellers (SRE) for the LMG 60 DE design vessels ordered recently by Norwegian ferry operator Norled. The move further strengthens SCHOTTEL’s position in the Norwegian ferry market.

Wärtsilä redefines its organisational structure to accelerate strategy execution

Wärtsilä has decided to reorganise its Marine Business into three independent businesses. The objective of this change is to accelerate strategy execution, simplify the business structure, and strengthen business presence in the Board of Management. The new businesses, consisting of Marine Power, Marine Systems and Marine Voyage, will be operational as of 1 July 2020.

Three years ago, Silversea Cruises chose Telenor Maritime to provide 3G service for their entire fleet. This agreement has now been extended for three more years

This extension of the agreement is proof of quality. Now, Telenor Maritime will continue supporting and improving the complete digital value chain on board Silversea Cruises’ ultra-luxury ships, vastly enhancing both the guest experience and the operational efficiency.



ZetaDisplay receives two new orders of SEK 16 million from Hurtigruten

ZetaDisplay has signed two new orders for Digital Signage installations through its Norwegian subsidiary with Hurtigruten AS, the world’s largest expedition cruise line. The order has a value of approx. SEK 16 million over a five-year period. The project is expected to be delivered during the first quarter 2020 and is an upgrade of the Hurtigruten vessel FINNMARKEN and FRAM. In comparison with ROALD AMUNDSEN and FRIDTJOF NANSEN, which were recently equipped with the Group’s Digital Signage solutions, FINNMARKEN and FRAM are small-sized expedition cruise ships.

Molslinjen had record amount of passengers in 2019

Molslinjen had a continued growth in 2019 with 3.492.698 passengers (+8.3%) and 1.351.558 transported cars (+5.3%) between Jylland and Sjælland. 122 more departures where carried out to a total of 7640. In 2020 Molslinjen plan to increase the amount of departures with another 4.2%.

ABB and DNV GL make history with first vessel cybersecurity verification

In a milestone for the marine industry, ABB’s solutions on board a large passenger ship have been awarded cybersecurity verification from classification society DNV GL.

Havila Voyages selects Climeon for all four new ships

Climeon has received an order from Norwegian Havila Voyages to install Heat Power systems on four newly built vessels. The order value amounts to about SEK 15.4 million, and delivery is expected to take place in 2021 and 2022.

Industry Consortium Contracted to Run STM Infrastructure

The infrastructure for the entire Sea Traffic Management (STM) ecosystem has been contracted to the newly formed non-profit industry consortium, Navelink. All existing implementations and the current STM projects will run on a platform with high capacity. There will be professional development and staging environments to ease implementation of new services and updates of the existing ones. “To have a consortium of committed international industry actors running the infrastructure is a natural step towards a global secure interoperable STM infrastructure” says Per Löfbom, Chief STM Architect.



BC Ferries and Remontowa Shipbuilding contract for new ferry specifies Wärtsilä propulsion solution

The technology group Wärtsilä has again been selected to provide an integrated system consisting of the LNG plant, dual-fuel engines, and electrical propulsion system for the latest addition to Vancouver, Canada based BC Ferries’ series of Salish Class vessels. Three similar ferries, all operating on Wärtsilä engines fuelled by LNG, have already been delivered. As with the previous three ferries, Remontowa Shipbuilding (RSB), located in Gdansk, Poland, will also build this latest ship. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in January 2020.

Vestdavit takes control of davit-building partner Tritec Production

Leading boat-handling systems supplier Vestdavit has announced the acquisition of Tritec Production. The acquisition covers a complete steel fabrication, engineering and construction facility in Redzikowo, Poland, from where Tritec has been supporting Vestdavit as its principal davit assembly partner for more than a decade. Over the period, it has become expert in delivering the premium quality launch-and-recovery systems on which Vestdavit’s reputation relies.

The UK Chamber of Shipping has launched a competition to find new ideas that could help make the shipping industry greener, cleaner, more sustainable and get to net zero Shipping by 2050.

AS Tallink Grupp statistics for February 2020

In February 2020 AS Tallink Grupp transported 669 849 passengers, which is an 8.0% increase compared to February 2019. The number of cargo units increased by 19.5% to 34 794 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 12.6% to 75 282 units in the same comparison.

Scrubbers removing more sulphur than the mandatory requirement

Scrubber reliability and their emissions reducing efficiency were addressed in February during a technical seminar in which members of the Clean Shipping Alliance (CSA) 2020 reported on the installation and performance of their respective exhaust gas cleaning systems.
