Color Line want to build the world's largest plug-in hybrid ferry

FerryThe Norwegian ferry company Color Line is about to order the world’s largest hybrid ferry for the route Strömstad-Sandefjord.

The ferry is supposed to come into service in 2020 and will be a "plug-in hybrid", which will charge its batteries via cable with environmentally friendly electricity from an own land-connection and on bord via the ship's generators. The world's largest hybrid ferry will be 160m long and offer capacity for 2,000 passengers and 430-500 cars.

The new ferry is part of the tender for the allocation of departure times from the port of Sandefjord and requires that Sandefjord allocates the 10:00 departure to Color Line. The ferry with the working name "Color Hybrid" will have about double the capacity than the BOHUS, which shall be replaced by the new building. The sailing into and out of the fjord to/from Sandefjord will be totally under battery power, without any emissions. This emerges from the application that Color Line has sent to the Sandefjord municipality on allocation of sailing times after 1 January 2020.

Once the shore connection has been built in Sandefjord, all Norwegian ports of call of Color Line will have such a connection. "We have the ambition to be a leader in European short sea shipping and "Color Hybrid" is a new evidence of this", says Color Lines CEO Trond Kleivdal.

The application on allocation of sailing times from Sandefjord follows antitrust proceedings by the ESA (EFTA Surveillance Authority) in March 2015, as a consequence of which it ordered that as of 1 January 2020 the "sailing times from Sandefjord inner harbour shall be reallocated based on criteria that safeguard competition, equal treatment, and non-discrimination." According to the ESA website, Fjord Line retains the right to operate its sailing times until 31 December 2025 and Sandefjord Municipality was obliged to announce the reallocation of sailing times as from 2020 no later than 1 March 2016, with 1 September 2016 as deadline for application."
