Stena Line to install battery power on STENA JUTLANDICA
Swedish ferry giant Stena Line recently signed a contract with Callenberg Technology Group to install a 1MWh battery package on board the Gothenburg-Frederikshavn ro-pax STENA JUTLANDICA.

Launching ceremony for Torghatten Nord’s NB 1080
Today, 2 March, the launching ceremony is held for the NB 1080 project at the Tersan Shipyard in Turkey. The double-ender is under construction for Norwegian Torghatten Nord and is one in a line of five newbuilds for the company, two of which are being built at the Vard Brevik shipyard.
First steel cut for Saga Cruises’ SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY
A steel cutting ceremony was held yesterday, 28 February, at the the Meyer Werft in Papenburg for SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY, the first newbuilding for UK-based Saga Cruises.
Color Line gets green light for NIS flag
The dispute between the Norwegian state and Color Line has come to an end. Color Line will therefore be allowed to switch its Oslo-Kiel cruise ferries COLOR FANTASY and COLOR MAGIC from the Norwegian flag (NOR) to the more liberal Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS).
Condor Ferries could be put for sale within the next 24 months
According to Charles Parkinson, Guernsey’s Economic Development President, British Channel Island ferry operator Condor Ferries could be put for sale in the coming 18 to 24 months.
Owner’s food for thought in Greek ferry route dispute
The highly competitive nature of the ferry business in Greece has again been brought into focus with a ferry company owner accusing the country’s Shipping Minister of repeatedly adopting a negative and catastrophic attitude towards his company.
ANAX delivered to Thassos Ferries
The Greek Kouris Shipyard has delivered the 2,600gt ANAX to Thassos Ferries. The double-ender has meanwhile arrived in Thassos where she joined the four-ship Thassos Ferries fleet which also includes the 2015-built ANASSA M, yet another product of the Amaliapolis-located Kouris Shipyard.
SAKURA to leave Japan for the Philippines
Uwajima-Unyu Ferries has found a buyer for its 1998-built SAKURA which was decommissioned in late 2017 following the introduction of the Naikai Zosen-built AKOBONO MARU on the 67km Yawatahama (Shikoku)-Usuki (Kyushu) route.

On Monday 26 February the LNG-powered double-ender ELIO of Caronte & Tourist glided into the water at the Sefine Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey.
Spanish Government to study a new route
The Lower House of the Spanish Government has approved a move to study a new summer season-only maritime route linking Cartagena (Murcia) with Ibiza and Palma (Mallorca).
AIDA brings its ordering tally to three
Carnival Corporation & plc has signed a newbuilding contract with Meyer Werft for a third Helios-Class cruise ship for its AIDA Cruises brand. The ship will be a sister to AIDAnova which will be delivered on 15 November 2018.
Electric cars will travel no longer for free on ferries in Norway
With electric cars becoming more popular in Norway – now accounting for 52% of the new car market – new regulations came into effect on 1 March. Electric cars will no longer travel for free on board Norwegian domestic ferries.
P&O Ferries will dramatically increase capacity at Tilbury thanks to a new river berth
With a strong growth in freight carryings between Zeebrugge and Tilbury, P&O Ferries announced that it has reached an agreement with Forth Ports to move its Tilbury terminal to a new GBP 150 million purpose-built river berth on the Thames.
Serious delay for ROALD AMUNDSEN causes cancellation of her first Antarctic season
The recently launched hybrid expedition cruise ship ROALD AMUNDSEN will be delayed. The initial delivery date was set for August this year, but this is no longer realistic with the delivery being postponed to spring 2019.
