China Merchants’ Weihai Shipyard – builders of Stena’s E-Flexer Class – is further expanding its orderbook with two Superstar Class ro-pax ferries it will build for Grimaldi Group subsidiary Finnlines. The contract was signed on 16 December and has just been officially announced by the Chinese builders.

Naikai Zosen Corporation has landed the long-awaited double order for Miyazaki Car Ferry’s next-generation ro-pax ferries which are set for delivery in May 2022 and November 2022, respectively.

DFDS unveils latest artist’s impressions of new ro-pax pair for Baltic service

DFDS has just released the latest artist’s impressions of the new 230m long and 31m beam Baltic Class ferries ordered at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in February last year. Construction of the first ship is well underway with 10,000 tonnes of steel already having been cut. A total of 12,951 tonnes of steel will be processed per ship with the keel laying of the first, yet unnamed ro-pax ferry expected soon.

Ponant has made the EUR 300 million memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Fincantieri announced a month ago, a firm contract. Fincantieri will design and build two 11,000gt, 230-passenger capacity luxury expedition cruise ships, due for delivery in 2022. To be built by Fincantieri-controlled VARD, the order includes an option for one more ship of the same class.

Osaka-based Meimon Taiyo Ferry (City Line), which operates the 458km Osaka-Shin Moji route with four ro-pax ferries, has announced that it will build two 15,400grt ro-pax ferries at Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki shipyard.

As expected, Canadian ferry and ro-ro operator CTMA has exercised its option to purchase the 1,054-lanemetre CLIPPER RANGER which it started to bareboat charter from Seatruck Ferries in July this year.

Moby Group released its 9M interim report

Moby Group, the activities of which encompass Ferries, including the Baltic Moby SPL cruise ferry operation, tug boats and port operations, has released its interim report for the first nine months of the year, ended 30 September 2019. Total revenues increased to EUR 501 million (EUR 479 million), while EBITDA (excluding the impact of the IFRS 16 application) reached EUR 119 million (EUR 68 million).

The global maritime transport industry has submitted a proposal to form the world’s first collaborative shipping R&D programme to help eliminate CO2 emissions from international shipping. The proposal includes core funding from shipping companies across the world of about USD 5 billion over a 10-year period.

DFDS’ European logistics network expanded with Finnish company

To further expand and develop DFDS’ European logistics services, DFDS has acquired 100% of the share capital of the Finnish logistics company Freeco Logistics based in Turku, with additional offices in Vantaa, Finland, and Tallinn, Estonia.

Lloyd’s Register’s certification validates Wärtsilä Marine’s cyber security measures

The technology group Wärtsilä has been awarded Lloyd’s Register (LR) system-level cyber certification for its network architecture relating to Wärtsilä’s integrated main and auxiliary machinery. The LR’s ShipRight SAFE AL2 certification, which is with Wärtsilä’s Data Collection Unit (WDCU), gives Approval-in-Principle (AiP) for the entire Wärtsilä integrated system network, rather than for any individual component. The certification is one of the first of its kind to be awarded globally.

New Chief Information Officer Named for Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia

Marshall Lancaster has been appointed as chief information officer for the professional services division supporting Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia. In this role, Marshall will oversee the entire information technology portfolio for these four cruise brands.

Changes in Finnlines’ Management

Finnlines announced that as from 1 January 2020, Mr Thomas Doepel has been appointed COO of Finnlines Group and Mr Mikael Lindholm has been appointed Head of Newbuilding Department. Both Mr Doepel and Mr Lindholm are members of the Executive Committee and report to the President and CEO Emanuele Grimaldi.

Carnival Corporation Joins Getting to Zero Coalition for Zero Emission Operations

Carnival Corporation & plc announced it has joined the Getting to Zero Coalition, an alliance of organizations across the maritime, energy, infrastructure and finance sectors committed to accelerating the decarbonization of the international shipping industry. Carnival Corporation, with nine global cruise line brands, is the first cruise company to join the global alliance.

MOL and e5 Lab Launch Study on Hydrogen Hybrid Pure Car Carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Junichiro Ikeda) and e5 Lab. Inc. (e5 Lab; President: Tomoaki Ichida; Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), which are working to develop and promote electrically powered zero emission vessels, have concluded a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) to conduct a joint study of a hybrid pure car carrier equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system and large-capacity batteries (hydrogen hybrid PCC).

Wärtsilä Vessel Traffic Service to increase efficiency of Europe’s 2nd largest RoRo port

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply its Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) solution to two of France’s leading ports, Calais and Boulogne. Calais is the leading port in France for passenger traffic and the second largest port in Europe for RoRo vessel traffic, while Boulogne-sur-Mer is the leading fishing vessel port in France. The Wärtsilä VTS will effectively manage vessel traffic in these busy harbours to deliver greater operational efficiency and safety. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in October 2019 by Région Hauts-de-France, the government entity responsible for this tender.

CLIA Releases 2020 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook Report

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade organization, is releasing the 2020 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook report. According to the analysis, cruising sustained 1,177,000 jobs equaling $50.24 billion in wages and salaries and $150 billion total output worldwide in 2018.

BC Ferries eliminates fuel surcharge

BC Ferries announced that the current 1.5 per cent fuel surcharge will be removed as of December 17, 2019. BC Ferries closely monitors the price of fuel and applies a rebate or surcharge, or neither, under a regulatory process that is independent of fares.

Grimaldi Group wins excellence in decarbonisation towards 2050 at the Lloyd's list Europe awards

Grimaldi Group won “Excellence in Decarbonisation towards 2050” at the Lloyd’s List Europe Awards presented on the 10 December at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London. The event, organized by Lloyd’s List, was hosted by English actor Hugh Dennis. Among the 400 shipping professionals who attended the ceremony there were also representatives of the main international organizations in the sector, such as the Secretary General of IMO (International Maritime Organization), Kitack Lim, and the Secretary General of ICS (International Chamber of Shipping), Guy Platten.

Preliminary investigation concludes coolant leakage caused the fire onboard the car-ferry YTTERØYNINGEN

Following the incident on YTTERØYNINGEN on 10th of October this year, a thorough investigation of both the course of events and the cause of the incident has been ongoing. The investigation has been led by the Kvinnherad police in Hordaland, Norway. Fire engineering expertise from the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service, DNV GL, Norwegian Maritime Authorities, Corvus Energy, the insurance companies, and other stakeholders have also been involved.

CSSC and DNV GL sign new strategic cooperation agreement

CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in the world, has entered into a new strategic partnership with DNV GL. A framework agreement between both parties was signed during Marintec China trade fair last week by Mr. Qian Jianping, Vice President of CSSC, and Norbert Kray, Regional Manager for Greater China at DNV GL – Maritime. The ceremony was witnessed by Remi Eriksen, Group President & CEO of DNV GL, CSSC Chairman Mr. Lei Fanpei, and CSSC Group President Mr. Yang Jincheng.

Corvus Energy receives funding from the Government of Canada for R&D of energy storage and digitalization in marine vessels

Corvus Energy is pleased to announce that it will receive funding of up to $6 million from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) supporting a research and development project to create the next generation of energy storage and digitalization technologies for marine vessels.
