China Merchants’ Weihai Shipyard – builders of Stena’s E-Flexer Class – is further expanding its orderbook with two Superstar Class ro-pax ferries it will build for Grimaldi Group subsidiary Finnlines. The contract was signed on 16 December and has just been officially announced by the Chinese builders.

DFDS unveils latest artist’s impressions of new ro-pax pair for Baltic service

DFDS has just released the latest artist’s impressions of the new 230m long and 31m beam Baltic Class ferries ordered at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in February last year. Construction of the first ship is well underway with 10,000 tonnes of steel already having been cut. A total of 12,951 tonnes of steel will be processed per ship with the keel laying of the first, yet unnamed ro-pax ferry expected soon.

Ponant signs firm order with Fincantieri to build two cruise ships for its Paul Gauguin Cruises brand

Ponant has made the EUR 300 million memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Fincantieri announced a month ago, a firm contract. Fincantieri will design and build two 11,000gt, 230-passenger capacity luxury expedition cruise ships, due for delivery in 2022. To be built by Fincantieri-controlled VARD, the order includes an option for one more ship of the same class.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding adds two more ro-pax ferries to its tally

Osaka-based Meimon Taiyo Ferry (City Line), which operates the 458km Osaka-Shin Moji route with four ro-pax ferries, has announced that it will build two 15,400grt ro-pax ferries at Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki shipyard.

CTMA acquires CLIPPER RANGER

Moby Group released its 9M interim report

Moby Group, the activities of which encompass Ferries, including the Baltic Moby SPL cruise ferry operation, tug boats and port operations, has released its interim report for the first nine months of the year, ended 30 September 2019. Total revenues increased to EUR 501 million (EUR 479 million), while EBITDA (excluding the impact of the IFRS 16 application) reached EUR 119 million (EUR 68 million).

Lloyd’s Register’s certification validates Wärtsilä Marine’s cyber security measures

The technology group Wärtsilä has been awarded Lloyd’s Register (LR) system-level cyber certification for its network architecture relating to Wärtsilä’s integrated main and auxiliary machinery. The LR’s ShipRight SAFE AL2 certification, which is with Wärtsilä’s Data Collection Unit (WDCU), gives Approval-in-Principle (AiP) for the entire Wärtsilä integrated system network, rather than for any individual component. The certification is one of the first of its kind to be awarded globally.

New Chief Information Officer Named for Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia

Marshall Lancaster has been appointed as chief information officer for the professional services division supporting Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia. Wärtsilä Vessel Traffic Service to increase efficiency of Europe’s 2nd largest RoRo port

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply its Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) solution to two of France’s leading ports, Calais and Boulogne. Calais is the leading port in France for passenger traffic and the second largest port in Europe for RoRo vessel traffic, while Boulogne-sur-Mer is the leading fishing vessel port in France. The Wärtsilä VTS will effectively manage vessel traffic in these busy harbours to deliver greater operational efficiency and safety. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in October 2019 by Région Hauts-de-France, the government entity responsible for this tender.

CLIA Releases 2020 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook Report

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade organization, is releasing the 2020 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook report. According to the analysis, cruising sustained 1,177,000 jobs equaling $50.24 billion in wages and salaries and $150 billion total output worldwide in 2018.

BC Ferries eliminates fuel surcharge

BC Ferries announced that the current 1.5 per cent fuel surcharge will be removed as of December 17, 2019. BC Ferries closely monitors the price of fuel and applies a rebate or surcharge, or neither, under a regulatory process that is independent of fares.

Preliminary investigation concludes coolant leakage caused the fire onboard the car-ferry YTTERØYNINGEN

Following the incident on YTTERØYNINGEN on 10th of October this year, a thorough investigation of both the course of events and the cause of the incident has been ongoing. The investigation has been led by the Kvinnherad police in Hordaland, Norway. Fire engineering expertise from the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service, DNV GL, Norwegian Maritime Authorities, Corvus Energy, the insurance companies, and other stakeholders have also been involved.

CSSC and DNV GL sign new strategic cooperation agreement
