Indonesian ferry KMP DRAJAT PACIRAN launched
On Tuesday 5 December the Indonesian ferry KMP DRAJAT PACIRAN was launched at the PT. Adiluhung Saranasegara yard in Bangkalan, Indonesia.
BC Ferries plans for major Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal upgrades
The Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo route is considered one of BC Ferries’ three ‘star performers’, and the infrastructure at Horseshoe Bay, the West Vancouver terminal, is severely falling behind – failing to cope with the demand. BC Ferries is therefore planning for a CAD 250m rebuild project of the terminal in order to cope with the increased traffic.
Lübeck invests over EUR 39m in further port expansion and signs major contract
Just a few days after Port of Lübeck reached an agreement with the unions for a rescue package, the green light has been given for the expansion of Skandinavienkai in Travemünde with a new major contract also being announced.
Incentives for reducing vessel emissions and noise at the Port of Helsinki
The Port of Helsinki is reviewing its pricing as of 2018, offering incentives to reduce vessel emissions and noise. The possibility to apply for port fee discounts will be added.
Wärtsilä Electrical and Automation joint venture in China now fully operational
Wärtsilä has announced the opening of CSSC Wärtsila Electrical & Automation (Shanghai) Co. Ltd.(CWE&A), the joint venture company with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The opening was announced on 6 December at the Marintec 2017 conference and exhibition in Shanghai, China.
NIEUW STATENDAM launched
The launching of Holland America Line’s NIEUW STATENDAM together with the traditional coin ceremony was held today, 6 December, at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard.
Color Group considers listing on the Oslo stock exchange
Color Group, the Norwegian ferry company and owner of Color Line AS, is considering a possible listing on the Oslo stock exchange. A process has been started to evaluate the listing and banks have been appointed to prepare a potential initial public offering on the Oslo stock exchange.
Next Sea Traffic Management project approved, EfficientFlow
A new Sea Traffic Management (STM) project has received EU funding from the Interreg Central Baltic Programme. EfficientFlow covers many aspects of Sea Traffic Management in the ports of Rauma, Finland and Gävle, Sweden, as well as STM-enabled traffic flow management for the many large ferries that sail through the archipelago between Sweden and Finland. The project will run 2018-2020 with a budget of EUR 4.5m.
EIB and Wärtsilä sign a EUR 125m Research, Development and Innovation loan
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Wärtsilä, have signed a EUR 125m loan agreement to support the research and development of more environmentally friendly and efficient ship engines and power plants. This fifth loan to support Wärtsilä’s Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) will further solidify the cooperation with the EIB, which has resulted in tangible improvements in European engine technology since the first loan was signed in 2003.
New Public Service Contract for Cadiz-Canary Islands
The Spanish Merchant Marine Department has published a Public Service Offer (PSO) for a weekly service between Cadiz and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The service is to be operated by a ro-pax with a minimum capacity for 400 passengers, all in cabins, and at least 170 cars, and must be less than 20 years old.
SOROLLA takes a hit
The 26,916gt SOROLLA of Trasmediterranea suffered a mishap whilst berthing in Almeria on Saturday 2 December, due to a sudden gust of wind. The stern hit the quay causing damage to the port side stern corner of the hull. Fortunately, there was no damage to the stern ramps, and passengers and vehicles were able to disembark.
Hurtigruten extends to Russia, Svalbard and goes through the Northwest Passage
Just a few days after the announcement that Hurtigruten will operate the brand-new hybrid expedition ships ROALD AMUNDSEN and FRIDTJOF NANSEN along the Norwegian coast in the summer of 2019, the company has announced a further extension of the itineraries to Russia and more sailings to Svalbard.
STENA AB financial result for 1 January – 30 September 2017
Stena, with business operations ranging from ferry operations, offshore drilling, shipping, properties and recycling has released their interim report for the nine-month period 1 January – 30 September 2017. Highlights below for the ferry and shipping operations:
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to restructure shipbuilding business
On 1 December 2017, Japan’s largest machinery manufacturer, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced that it will restructure its shipbuilding business, and set up two shipbuilding companies in Nagasaki and Yokohama on 1 January 2018.
Flensburger Shipyard to get double order from parent company?
According to local media, Siem Group, the Norwegian parent company of Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG), has placed an order for two more ro-ro freighters of the same design as the 4,076-lanemetre MELEQ/GARDENIA SEAWAYS-type, keeping the yard occupied until mid-2019.
UPDATED: TAKU sold to become a hotel
KeyMar LLC, has withdrawn their bid and thereby the plans to turn TAKU into a hotel in Portland. KeyMar LLC cited factors such as regulatory problems in Portland. The highest bid is now instead from Jabal Al Lawz Trading Est. of Dubai at USD 171,000 with plans of either giving the ferry a new life in the Philippines, or take it for scrap. The final sales terms and agreements are negotiated, and the state has not yet given official acceptance of the bid.
New quay for Port of Gdansk will benefit ro-ro cargoes
Competition for the ‘2017 CEF Transport Blending MAP Call’ has just been concluded, amounting to EUR 1bn funds in total from The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for which as many as 68 projects were competing.
ICG Group takes redelivery of WESTPAC EXPRESS and refinances debt
Irish Continental Group (ICG) has made the announcements that the WESTPAC EXPRESS is redelivered to the Group and that they are refinancing the Group’s debt.
