The start-up of the new Northern Isles ferry services contract in Scotland has been further delayed after CalMac started legal action against the Scottish Government over the awarding of the contract to current contract holder Serco NorthLink Ferries.

Naviera Armas inaugurates new terminal in the port of Las Palmas

The new emblematic terminal of the Naviera Armas-Trasmediterránea Group, situated on the Nelson Mandela Pier, Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is up and running. The new terminal will serve both passenger and freight traffic. It is the first privately-financed passenger terminal in a Spanish state-owned port.

At a meeting with the Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas, leaders from the municipalities of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa have discussed pros and cons of buying a second-hand ferry compared to ordering a newbuild. The meeting took place on 30 November.

Orskov Yard invests in a large mobile shore power unit

Orskov Yard has invested in a large mobile shore power unit, which has just been put into service. The system converts onshore power and can deliver 1200 kVA by 400/440/660/690 V and 50/60 HZ. The new unit from the Danish company PowerCon is delivered in a 10 feet long container, which makes it flexible to be placed on various locations around the yard.

AS Tallink Grupp statistics for November 2019

In November 2019 AS Tallink Grupp transported 698 293 passengers, which is a 6.7% increase compared to November 2018. The number of cargo units decreased by 3.8% to 33 222 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 3.3% to 73 537 units in the same comparison.

Climeon delivers new steam turbine solution to Viking Line

Climeon has developed a new steam turbine solution tailored for Viking Line’s new ship VIKING GLORY. The two steam turbines have now passed a Factory Acceptance Test with Viking Line and the certification body DNV-GL present. The steam turbines are part of the order placed by Viking Line in 2017 and will be delivered to VIKING GLORY over the upcoming months.

FinFerries signs contract with Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment about 40 road ferry routes

Suomen Lauttaliikenne Oy, Finferries, has signed service agreements with the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY-keskus) for 40 road ferry routes in Finland. The routes are divided into 4 sets of contracts, the length of which varies from 6 to 10 years. The new agreements will improve service levels on many routes and also bring new, environmentally friendly ferries to sensitive waterways.

Wärtsilä and Silverstream to collaborate on accelerating deployment of air lubrication technology

The technology group Wärtsilä, and Silverstream Technologies, the leading air lubrication solution provider, today announced the signing of a Licence and Co-operation Agreement for future sales and servicing of the Silverstream System. As an authorised sales and service partner, Wärtsilä intends to fully integrate Silverstream’s air lubrication system within its propulsion solutions.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) welcomes decision by the Government of India to embrace The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC)

The Indian government has ratified the HKC, significantly increasing the likelihood of its entry into force. Adopted in May 2009, the Convention will ensure that ships are recycled in a safe, environmentally friendly and transparent manner, providing global oversight to an economically and environmentally essential industry.

UECC has secured “Green Financing” in relation to the Company’s investment in new generation pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) with Battery Hybrid LNG Solution taking the company beyond IMO’s target of 40 percent carbon reduction by 2030.
