VISBORG being prepared for delivery

Destination Gotland’s 32,000gt VISBORG is almost ready for delivery from Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) with the final tests reportedly being carried out. According to Sweden’s public radio Sveriges Radio, the 1,650-passenger and 1,750-lanemetre ro-pax will be handed over to her Swedish owners on 21 November.

Norled signs contract with Sembcorp Marine for three battery-powered ferries

Sembcorp Marine has been awarded its first ro-pax design and construction project after Norled signed a contract for three identical battery-powered ferries with the yard. The COLOR HYBRID - to become the largest plug-in hybrid ro-pax ferry when introduced between Sandefjord and Strömstad in June 2019 - has left the Crist shipyard in Gdynia and is seen being towed to the Ulstein Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway for final outfitting. 



Financials

Tallink Grupp released its financial results for 3Q and the first nine months of 2018

Revenue for the Group in 3Q increased by EUR 0.9 million compared to last year, totalling EUR 283.6 million.  The Group’s unaudited net profit was EUR 46.1 million, 3.6% lower than 3Q 2017. The Group earned a EUR 41.8 million net profit for the first nine months, a EUR 3.6 million decrease compared to the same period last year. The Group’s unaudited revenue for the nine months decreased by 1.5% to EUR 723.2 million compared to the same period last year.

Marine Atlantic carries more passengers, improves revenues but is impacted by increasing fuel bill

While the number of sailings has remained almost unchanged (-0.9%), MA managed to keep the total turnover stable at CAD 112.6 million, 1.1% lower than in fiscal year 2016-17, reflecting slightly higher passenger-related revenues, but stable bunker surcharge and lower other incomes. Total expenses reached CAD 237.2 million, leaving a deficit before federal government funding of CAD 124.6 million. The revenues to expenses ratio ended at 47%, down four points from 2016-2017.

ClassNK Releases “PrimeShip-GREEN/ProSTA ver.ITTC”

Classification society ClassNK released “PrimeShip-GREEN/ProSTA ver.ITTC” on 1st November 2018. It is the world’s first software that calculates and analyzes a ship’s speed for Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) calculation in compliance with the latest International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) 2017 Guidelines (ITTC Recommended Procedures and Guidelines 7.5-04-01-01.1, Preparation, Conduct and Analysis of Speed/Power Trials; 2017) for EEDI verification.

Second Teesport rail link provides further trade connection for Scotland

PD Ports has launched a second rail service connecting Teesport direct with Scotland opening up further opportunities to connect global importers and exporters with the north of the UK. The new service, operated by DB Cargo, will run five days a week from the quayside at Teesport to PD Stirling Terminal at Mossend in Glasgow. The timings of the service operate in direct connection with the P&O Ferries service calling daily at Teesport from Zeebrugge and Rotterdam; providing a vital connection for shippers, shipping lines and forwarders looking for frequent, flexible and efficient routes to market.

Wärtsilä strengthens its position as a global operator in the underwater services market by acquiring Spanish Burriel Navarro

The technology group Wärtsilä has acquired Burriel Navarro, S.L, a company operating in underwater services in the main ports of Spain. The acquisition supports the growth of Wärtsilä’s underwater services and expands the company’s local presence in the European market. Burriel Navarro will be part of Trident, a Wärtsilä company. Burriel Navarro has 20 employees and its annual revenue is approximately EUR 1.3 million. The acquisition was signed and closed on 31 October 2018.

First fully-electric vessels to operate in Canada with SCHOTTEL propulsion

SCHOTTEL has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards to equip the first fully-electric vessels to operate in Canada. The new Amherst Island and Wolfe Island ferries will be propelled by four SCHOTTEL Twin Propellers STP 260 FP, each with an input power of up to 550 kW.

Deltamarin and Elomatic to design second Global class cruise ship for MV WERFTEN

Deltamarin and Elomatic, both from Turku Finland, have signed a significant agreement with MV WERFTEN Wismar GmbH for the basic and detail design of a second Global class cruise ship. The value of the contract is approximately €16.5M for Deltamarin and €17M for Elomatic. The vessel will be built in parallel in Wismar and Rostock, Germany. The contract was signed on 26.10.2018 and design work has already commenced.

MacGregor signs Letter of Intent on strategic cooperation with CSSC

MacGregor and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on strategic cooperation. The LOI was signed on 29 October, 2018 at an executive level meeting in Beijing led by Lei Fanpei, the CSSC Chairman and Michel van Roozendaal, MacGregor President.

Incat Crowther 125 Dual-Fuel Ro-Pax Fast Catamaran (Baleària)

The shipping company Balearia has announced construction of the world’s first fast ferry for passenger and cargo powered by dual-fuel LNG engines. The Incat Crowther 125 design is a new class of ferry, being the first to use dual-fuel reciprocating engines and will also be one of the largest fast catamarans in service when it is delivered in 2020.

United Colors of Benetton to open a brand new store in T1 Mall of Tallinn

Benetton will raise the curtains on its new store, conveniently located in the shopping centre T1 Mall of Tallinn, the newest shopping, entertainment and leisure complex to be opened in November.

DFDS appoints SMC to revitalize design concepts on their eastern channel fleet

Ferry operator DFDS has announced the appointment of the ferry and cruise ship design consultancy, SMC Design, to redevelop its catering outlets on board its Eastern Channel routes. The redesign will commence when the first Dover-Dunkirk vessel enters dry-dock on 7 January 2019, with plans to complete the entirety of the fleet in just five weeks. The £1,800,000 investment, equating to £600K per ship, will see the relaxed food and beverage outlet revitalized to create the Lighthouse Café, a fresh and modern café-dining experience.

Global trade association Interferry has welcomed this week’s decision by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to uphold previously agreed sector-specific Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) targets for ro-ro passenger and ro-ro freight vessels.

Scrubbers – the retrofit wave is coming

With the IMO 2020 deadline looming, shipowners around the globe are faced with a difficult choice.
The time for hoping the enforcement of emissions regulations will be delayed has passed, and owners are now forced to decide on how they will comply. Until January 1, 2020 only those operating in the Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) are challenged by the lower sulfur limits, but after that date there are really only two choices: operate using emissions compliant fuels, or ensure that emissions are cleaned using an exhaust gas scrubber.
