BREAKING NEWS - Minoan Lines and Attica Holdings agree on a solution for Hellenic Seaways
In a statement to the Athens Stock Exchange, Minoan Lines today (26 October) announced that a framework agreement has been signed with Attica Holdings to proceed with the transfer of all shares it holds in Hellenic Seaways (HSW).
WORLD DREAM handed over to Dream Cruises
Today, 26 October, Meyer Werft handed over WORLD DREAM to her owners, the Asian shipping company Dream Cruises, a subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong.
MSC Cruises sends MSC LIRICA back to the Med
As from 6 April 2018, MSC LIRICA will be homeported in Venice (also boarding passengers in Bari) to serve Eastern Mediterranean routes.
Blu Navy sees surge in passenger numbers and will add a second ship on Elba line
Tuscany-based company Blu Navy has handled over 584,000 passengers in 2017. 460,000 passengers (+5%) were recorded on 1,833 trips to the Elba Island, i.e. the Portoferraio-Piombino line which is operated by ACCIARELLO.
Caronte & Tourist has introduced the chartered NISSOS RODOS
NISSOS RODOS, a 29,733 gt ro-pax ferry of Hellenic Seaways, has reached the Southern Tyrrhenian for a fairly short charter to Caronte & Tourist. The Japanese-built ferry, which underwent a major conversion in 2010, has now been introduced between Salerno and Messina.
Sunken SEA DIAMOND to be raised
In the wake of its handling of an oil spill after a small bunker tanker sank off Athens beaches, the Greek government has ordered the raising of the sunken cruise ship SEA DIAMOND which foundered off the holiday island of Santorini ten years ago, leaving two French passengers missing presumed dead.
Deal of the year: Naviera Armas to take over Trasmediterranea

Family-controlled Naviera Armas will take over Trasmediterranea, Spain’s premier ferry operator in which it already held a minority stake following the company’s 2002 privatisation.
TYCHO BRAHE now ready to operate on battery power
The battery-converted ferry TYCHO BRAHE was initially planned to operate on battery power by the end of June this year. However, due to technical problems this had to be postponed.
Destination Gotland to continue the Västervik route for the summer 2018
Destination Gotland has announced that they are going to continue to service the route to Visby, Gotland from Västervik also for the summer 2018. The ferry company started sailing from Västervik in June this year with almost daily departures and noted an uprise in passengers, which is why a decision has been taken to continue the route next summer.
Growth for The Cat’s second year despite engine failures
Following the bankruptcy of Nova Star Cruises, Bay Ferries Ltd was awarded the contract for the Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia ferry service in 2016.
Best ever cruise season for Port of Kiel
The Port of Kiel’s 2018 cruise season was closed by AIDAvita as the German port reached a record number of passengers.
Record number of cruise passengers for Helsinki port
With a total of 478,000 cruise ship passengers, the Finnish capital reached a new record high in 2017. This represents an increase of 17% over 2016 and a 9.5% increase over 2015, the previous record year.
Cold ironing for Stena Line in Port of Trelleborg
Stena Line will be connecting the Rostock-Trelleborg ro-pax ferries SKÅNE and MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN to the electricity grid during their calls in the Port of Trelleborg. Once connected, the machinery on board can be completely shut down, bringing emissions down to practically zero.
Inter Shipping replaces STENA CARRIER by MAESTRO SUN
Inter Shipping has replaced the 2,715-lanemetre STENA CARRIER (chartered from Stena RoRo since September 2016) by Maestro Shipping’s 2,171-lanemetre MAESTRO SUN for its Algeciras-Tangier Med route. The change took effect on Saturday, 21 October.
Charter of BALTICA extended
Godby Shipping has announced that the charter contract of the 1990-built, 2,200-lanemetre BALTICA to TransProCon has been extended until June 2018 with an option to extend with a further six months.
4% more freight but 3% less passengers for Brittany Ferries
Leading French ferry operator Brittany Ferries has just released its passenger and freight carryings for the period between November 2016 and October 2017.
Rederi AB Gotland published its interim report
Rederi AB Gotland which, in addition to ferry operator Destination Gotland AB, also includes property management, hotel operations and Stockholms Reparationsvarv AB together with Nya Skärgårdsbolaget AB, has released its interim report for the 1 January-31 August 2017 period.
Scotland: public money spent on ferries under scrutiny
Audit Scotland – a Scottish government watchdog – has highlighted ferry spending via Transport Scotland has more than doubled between 2007/2008 and 2016/2017; from GBP 97.3m to GBP 209.7m – a rise of 115%.
