Japanese ferry operator Taiheiyo Ferry’s latest fleet addition – the ro-pax KITAKAMI – entered service today, 25 January, on the route Tomakomai-Sendai-Nagoya, having been built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works.

Kvarken Link firms up contract for new ro-pax ferry

The Letter of Intent (LoI) which Kvarken Link signed with Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) on 11 January has now turned into a firm contract for the construction of a EUR 120 million hybrid ro-pax ferry with a capacity of 800 passengers and 1,500 lanemetres.

CELEBRITY FLORA, Celebrity cruises’ 100-passenger boutique cruise ship purpose-built for the Galápagos islands, was launched at the Dutch De Hoop shipyard on Saturday 19 January. In a few weeks’ time she will be towed to Rotterdam for completion. Delivery is set for May this year.

On 19 January, Japanese shipbuilder Usuki Shipyard launched the small a ro-pax ferry FERRY KAIHO. The 83.9m long and 13.6m beam ferry will be introduced on Kume Shosen’s 98.5km Kume Shima - Tonaki Jima - Naha route, joining the 2012-built FERRY RYUKYU.

Strong year confirms Marseille Fos growth trend

Volumes last year in key areas of activity confirmed Marseille Fos as the leading French cargo and cruise port – a result matched by dynamic progress at its logistics and industrial sites. Total cargo throughput improved 1% on 2017 to 81 million tonnes. Standout performances included a seventh consecutive year of growth in container traffic, which rose 2% for 1.4 million teu, and a 12% increase in dry bulks at 15.2MT. Meanwhile cruise numbers leapt 15% to 1.7 million passengers. 

Port of Gothenburg freight volumes 2018

Port of Gothenburg freight figures for 2018 have just been compiled. Container volumes rose by 17 per cent compared with the previous year. Energy products, intra-European ro-ro* units and new cars all fell by one per cent, albeit in relation to the high comparative figures for these three segments in 2017.

Efficiency of Wärtsilä Ballast Water Management Systems validated by strong demand

The technology group Wärtsilä has recently been awarded a number of contracts to supply its Aquarius UV Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) to global shipping operators. The systems will enable the vessels to be compliant with the Ballast Water Management Convention regulations that entered into force in September 2017 for all new build vessels. The contracts cover in total 13 systems, the orders for which were all booked in quarter four 2018.

EBDG Represents AMD Marine Consulting Designs

Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) has signed a licensing agreement with AMD Marine Consulting (AMD) of Sydney, Australia to be their exclusive North American vessel design representative. AMD specializes in high-speed, multi-hull vessel designs. The partnership brings together a wide-ranging collection of vessels and marine expertise.

The second annual global Maritime Training Insights Database (MarTID) survey examines global maritime training practices and trends, and is officially open.

The Seine may soon be the world’s greenest river and Paris boat operators are leading the way. The City of Paris has set ambitious goals to improve air quality and reduce the city’s carbon footprint in conjunction with the upcoming Olympic Games in 2024. Dubbed “Green Paris”, these goals will, in large part, be reached through transitioning to clean electric mobility. 

Deltamarin’s further involvement in TITANIC II project confirmed

Blue Star Line has contracted Deltamarin to continue with the design of TITANIC II. The contract covers activities and tasks for the design process, consultancy and project management services.
