Nice port plans restrictions on ferry traffic

Nice mayor Christian Estrosi announced that a EUR 60 “carbon tax” per car and per ship call was investigated by the city as a measure to tackle air pollution generated by ferry traffic in the city.
Nice port is right to the city centre.
Trasmed GLE link Barcelona with Alcudia and Menorca

Trasmed GLE, the new subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group, have announced that with effect 20th September, they will introduce a call at the port of Alcudia in Mallorca on their service between Barcelona and Mahon in Menorca.

Scottish government-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), the company that owns the fleet of ferries operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) has shortlisted four shipyards in Poland, Romania and Turkey to build the two ferries for CalMac’s lifeline service from the Scottish mainland to the island of Islay. Originally there was to have been just one newbuilding.

Continued problems with supply chains and rising cargo volumes are poised to drive valuations and charter rates of pure truck and car carriers (PCTC) higher still after a bull run in the recent past.

On the occasion of the Assises de l’économie de la mer event, Brittany Ferries and the CMA CGM Group announced that CMA CGM has agreed to make a EUR 25 million investment in Brittany Ferries, including EUR 10 million in quasi-equity. Through this agreement, CMA CGM is seeking to support Brittany Ferries’ post-Covid-19 recovery.
Testing of hybrid electric ferry HEILHORN started

Torghatten Trafikkselskap started testing of the hybrid electric ferry HEILHORN over the weekend on the crossing between Vennesund and Holm, which the 3,100 GT vessel will operate.
Bent-Joachim Bentzen, head of transport and infrastructure at the Nordland regional council, welcomed the start of the testing of the ship that was delivered from Sefine shipyard in Turkey last year by saying that using battery power would remove CO2 emissions equal to those of 6,000 cars per year.
Ålandstrafiken’s second hand ferry project moves forward

Ålandstrafiken, the transport company owned by the government of the Åland Islands, has asked EUR4 million to be used for the purchase of a second hand ferry.
A decision in principle to acquire a new vessel had been made earlier.
The EUR4 million is included in a draft supplementary budget that the government of the autonomous islands that belong to Finland presented towards the end of last week.
Tersan Shipyard delivered RØDVENFJORD to Fjord1

The 108m RØDVENFJORD has been delivered to Fjord1 from Tersan Shipyard. She is a sister to ERESFJORD, delivered at the end of 2019, and will service between Sølsnes and Åfarnes in Norway.
RØDVENFJORD and ERESFJORD have 2 Nogva engines in combination with a 1.5MWh battery pack and are capable of running fully electric.

CIUDAD DE IBIZA from Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea is now connected to the electricity grid at the Port of Almería, thus avoiding the use of auxiliary engines and significantly reducing the footprint of noise and emissions.
CIUDAD DE IBIZA is the second ship to receive electricity supply in the Port of Almería. Last year in August, the VOLCAN DE TIJARAFE ferry was the first to receive it.

The hybrid-electric exploration cruise vessel LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT became the first vessel of its kind to reach the geographic North Pole on September 6, 2021, as it was completing the sea trials in preparation for welcoming guests for the maiden voyage later this year.
AI will reduce emissions from Stena Line’s Polish ferry

With the help of artificial intelligence, Stena Line will reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions from the Polish ferry STENA NORDICA. The ship is the eighth in Stena Line's fleet to be equipped with the AI assistant Stena Fuel Pilot, which supports the captains to drive in the most fuel-efficient way between Karlskrona and Gdynia.

Zinus has secured a new contract for the delivery of autonomous charging systems to two ferry connections in Nordland county and will thus have all the major ferry companies in Norway as end customers. “The contract shows that our Norwegian-manufactured products for the green shift are doing well in competition with major international providers,” says Ronny Olson, Sales Manager at Zinus.
Viking Line reveals: VIKING GLORY to have Baltic Sea’s first rotating private dining room with 220-degree unobstructed sea view
Viking Line is now building one of the world’s most climate-smart vessels, VIKING GLORY. The vessel, to provide daily service on the Turku-Mariehamn-Stockholm route starting in early 2022, will offer out-of-the-ordinary cruise experiences. It can now be revealed that Viking Glory will be the first on the Baltic Sea with Fyren, its glazed-in private dining room with a rotating table and unbeatable view. At the same time, the newly developed bistro restaurant Kobba is being launched.
Zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell ferry hits the water

Incat Crowther announced the launch of SEA CHANGE. The Incat Crowther 22 is the world’s first zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric-drive high speed passenger ferry. Delivered by All American Marine, the project has been spearheaded by the vessel owner SWITCH Maritime and was brought to fruition by a consortium of contributors, including Incat Crowther, Zero Emissions Industries, BAE Systems and Hornblower Group, who Incat Crowther worked closely with on the recent NYC Ferry newbuild program.
Wasaline develops package travels
In order to ensure a broad and competitive range of accommodation in the Umeå and Vaasa regions, as well as guarantee customer satisfaction, Wasaline has launched a new digital platform for hotel packages. The platform is called Citybreak and is developed by Visit Group, one of the Nordic leaders in e-commerce, packaging, and distribution in the tourism industry.
bp and NYK Line join forces to help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors
bp and NYK Line have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future fuels and transportation solutions to help industrial sectors, including shipping, decarbonise.
For shipping, the companies will collaborate and identify opportunities to help transition from current marine fuels to alternatives such as LNG, biofuels, and methanol, and to develop future fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen. Getting this journey right will be critical to enabling the shipping industry to meet its long-term decarbonisation ambitions.
DFDS European logistics network expanded in Eastern Europe with acquisition of ICT Logistics
To further expand and develop DFDS’ European logistics services, DFDS has acquired 100% of the share capital of the Danish freight forwarder ICT Logistics focused on providing transport solutions between Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, particularly Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Latvia, and Lithuania. DFDS has owned 19.9% of the shares in ICT Logistics since 2006.

DFDS has completed the acquisition of the HSF Logistics Group. The company is one of Europe’s leading cold chain logistics providers to meat producers and other food producers that operate temperature-controlled supply chains.

After the successful conclusion of the negotiations on the bridging loan (WSF), together with the representatives of the federal government, the state and the shareholder, and the first partial repayment of 193 million euros by the shipyard in June of this year, the shipyard group is currently focused on completion of the first Global Class ship, the GLOBAL DREAM in 2022 and complete financing for the completion of the second Global Class ship in 2024.
UK shipping industry demands net-zero by 2050
In a landmark decision, the UK shipping industry has agreed that the international shipping sector must pursue a net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050.
International regulations require the global shipping industry to cut their emissions by 50% compared to 2008 levels. But the UK Chamber of Shipping has now confirmed it wants the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to double this target and commit to net-zero emissions by 2050.

DFDS: August volume report: freight growth continued in most regions
Ferry – freight: Total volumes in August 2021 were 0.6% above 2020. Net adjustments for structural route changes reduced growth 1.9 ppt to -1.3%.
Ferry – passenger: The total number of passengers in August 2021 was 38.9% below 2020 reflecting a continued negative impact from travel restrictions as well as a temporary easing of restrictions in the first half of August 2020. Baltic Sea’s passenger volumes continued to be above 2020.
Solid comeback for Stena Line’s ferry traffic between Denmark and Sweden
Stena Line has had a summer above expectations, where travel between Denmark and Sweden has increased by more than 167% in July and August this year compared to the same period last year.
