New Zealand’s state-owned KiwiRail, operators of the Interislander ferry service between Wellington and Picton, has selected Danish naval architects OSK-ShipTech to develop the concept design of the company’s next-generation railway/ro-ro passenger ferries which should meet the company’s requirements well into the future and should be ready for service on the Cook Strait in 2024.

MSC will spend USD 140 million to lengthen its 2010-built MSC MAGNIFICA. The project, which will be carried out in the spring of 2021, will see the vessel become 23m longer, adding among it 215 new cabins.

As Shippax earlier reported, the AVIC Weihai Shipyard yesterday (10 September) held a double ceremony for the floating of GALICIA on the one hand and the first steel cutting of SALAMANCA on the other.

Due to strong winds it was decided to delay the floating out of GALICIA from the Number One building dock. Weather circumstances were much better today, 11 September, and the Chinese shipbuilder was so kind to send us a selection of photos which we hereby share with our readers.

DFDS and Moby have agreed to swap ro-pax tonnage whereby Moby’s 2,000-lanemetre and 2,080-passenger capacity MOBY WONDER and MOBY AKI, currently serving the domestic Livorno-Olbia route, will be acquired by DFDS in the second half of October. In return, Moby will take over DFDS’s IJmuiden-North Shields (Newcastle) mainstays PRINCESS SEAWAYS and KING SEAWAYS.

Eckerö Line has seen a continued strong growth, largely attributed to the introduction of FINBO CARGO, the former EUROPEAN ENDEAVOUR, on the freight-oriented route between Vuosaari (Helsinki) and Muuga (Tallinn). During the month of July alone, Eckerö Line increased its cargo carryings by 27%. As Eckerö Line states, the new vessel has helped to increase its freight market share on the Finland-Estonia routes to 20%. All in all, Eckerö Line carried 10% more passengers in the June-July-August period. The former record figure from 2018 for passengers in July was again surpassed by a 14%-increase, reaching 242,505 passengers.

As Viking Line reported in a press release, its Kapellskär-Mariehamn ferry ROSELLA carried almost 335,000 passengers during the three summer months of June, July and August. This represents an increase of 6% compared to the same period in 2018, and a new record for the ship and the route. Grand total for all vessels June-August 2019: 2,319,865 (+0.5%).

Tallink Grupp has announced establishing a subsidiary in Singapore this week under the name of Tallink Asia Pte Ltd. The group’s first subsidiary in Asia shall simplify the development and expansion of the group’s activities in Asia. Taavi Tiivel, Tallink Grupp’s Director of Development Operations will head the new outpost of Tallink in Singapore.

Super-efficient Wasaline ferry to get Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum navigation system

The new Wasaline RoPax ferry, currently under construction at the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) yard in Finland, will be fitted with the technology group Wärtsilä’s Nacos Platinum navigation and communication system. This latest order, placed with Wärtsilä in August, is in addition to the comprehensive package of Wärtsilä products, systems, and integrated solutions ordered earlier. These solutions include Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines, hybrid propulsion and power management, and the capability to operate on LNG and BioLNG fuel, making it one of the world’s most efficient and environmentally sustainable vessels.

BC Ferries Employees Remove 1,725 Kilograms of Garbage from BC Beaches

Hundreds of BC Ferries employees from across the province participated in shoreline cleanups this summer to help keep B.C.’s beaches clean. Employees from Haida Gwaii, the Southern Gulf Islands, Northern Gulf Islands, Comox and Campbell River, the Sunshine Coast, Victoria and Metro Vancouver all took part and gathered 1,725 kilograms of garbage, covering 50 km of shoreline.

As a part of the project «COMPA 2GO - Composite Repairs for Ships: Service Demonstration, Certification and Market Entry», as2con-Alveus d.o.o. succeeded in gaining Technology Feasibility certificate for its innovative technology COMPA Repairs. The project is financed under highly competitive Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 2 programme and it was selected for funding for its innovative nature and the benefits it can bring to the maritime sector providing faster, cheaper and much safer alternative than the traditional cutting and welding of steel parts on board a ship.

ABB enables emissions-free port stay in Marseille for Corsica Linea ferries

Instead of running diesel-fueled auxiliary engines, PAGLIA ORBA, JEAN NICOLI and PASCAL PAOLI ferries will use electricity for power at berth. Each of the three vessels is being modified to feature ABB’s power compensation solution Dynacomp, which allows electricity available from the local grid in Marseille to be stepped down to 11KV in order to take care of ship power needs while in port.

Eesti Gaas started bunkering LNG-powered ships in the port of Hanko

Eesti Gaas has started to provide LNG bunkering services to LNG-powered ships in the port of Hanko, Finland, for the first time in addition to Tallinn and Helsinki. For the port of Hanko, this means scheduled LNG bunkering on its premises, and Eesti Gaas will be providing the service to two new ships in addition to Tallink’s MEGASTAR

AIDAperla will receive the largest battery storage system in passenger shipping in 2020

On the occasion of the opening of Corvus Energy's first production plant in Bergen, Norway, AIDA President Felix Eichhorn and Corvus Energy signed the agreement on September 5, 2019 to electrify the first cruise ship of AIDA Cruises.
AIDAperla will be the first ship to be fitted with lithium-ion batteries from Corvus, produced in Norway, in 2020. The 300-meter-long cruise ship receives a battery pack capable of generating a total output of 10 MWh. As of today this will be the largest battery storage system worldwide to be ever installed on a passenger ship.

Trelleborg Facilitates Accommodation of Cruise Ships at Puerto Costa Maya

One of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, Puerto Costa Maya, has upgraded its port to simultaneously accommodate four cruise vessels – one more than previously, including two Oasis-class cruise ships. As part of the project, Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure operation supplied the port with its SeaGuard foam fenders and MSB-150 bollards, which were added to both sides of the pier.

Two SCHOTTEL-driven ferries for BC Ferries

German propulsion manufacturer SCHOTTEL has delivered propulsion units for two 81-metre road ferries to Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania. Each of the newly built vessels ordered by Canadian operator BC Ferries will be equipped with two high-efficiency SCHOTTEL Twin Propellers. Once operational, they will serve the Northern Gulf Islands off the coast of Vancouver.
