Incat to build 76m ferry for Korea

Incat will shortly commence construction of a new 76m ferry for Taesung Marine Transport of the Republic of Korea for the Pohang – Ulleungdo route. The new vessel will be delivered in early 2023.

More details are expected the coming weeks.

Solvay helps La Méridionale’s ferry PIANA go beyond emissions regulations

Following a successful test run showing excellent environmental performance, Solvay’s SOLVAir® Marine solution for dry exhaust gas treatment will be adopted on all engines of La Méridionale’s passenger (RoPAX) ferry PIANA, following close collaboration with engineering partner ANDRITZ.

Zero-emission AMHERST ISLANDER II and WOLFE ISLANDER IV successfully completed

The construction and trials of both 72-metre AMHERST ISLANDER II and the 99-metre WOLFE ISLANDER IV ferries were successfully completed. The vessels recently sailed from the shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Galati to Constanta, for onwards transportation to Canada onboard a heavy-lift semi-submersible transport vessel. 

AMHERST ISLANDER II has a capacity for 42 cars and 300 passengers, WOLFE ISLANDER IV 80 cars and 399 passengers.

Natural landscapes provide inspiration for new GeelongPort terminal design

GeelongPort and Spirit of Tasmania have unveiled the design images of Spirit of Tasmania’s new terminal building set to be constructed at Corio Quay in Geelong.
The state-of-the-art building, as part of Spirit of Tasmania’s passenger and freight terminal precinct, will be operational in Geelong in 2022, with construction due to begin later this year.

GNV announces new Menorca connection as of 14 September

Two months after the opening of the new lines in the Balearics, GNV announces the new connection from Barcelona with Ciutadella de Menorca, in Menorca.

The Visemar chartered GNV SEALAND will serve this new connection, together with stops at Palma de Mallorca, while the new GNV BRIDGE will also add Valencia to and from Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza to the connection.

MOL Concludes 'Transition Loan' Contract for 2 LNG-fueled Ferries - First Use of Transition Loan in Japan, Selected as Model for METI Climate Transition Finance

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines announced the conclusion of a syndicated "Transition Loan" for two LNG-fueled ferries: the SUNFLOWER KURENAI and the SUNFLOWER MURASAKI.

The Development Bank of Japan Inc. and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited served as the arrangers and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) as the co-arranger. Ontop of the three banks, this Transition Loan was jointly provided by 10 local financial institutions located mainly in Western Japan, near the routes on which the two ferries will be launched, and close to the shipyards where they will be built.It was selected as the first transition loan in Japan for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)'s climate transition model projects.

BC Ferries fifth Island Class ferry prepares for final leg of journey to B.C.

BC Ferries’ newest hybrid electric ship transited the Panama Canal over the weekend and is now preparing for its trip home to British Columbia. ISLAND 5, as it is temporarily named, departed Romania on July 31 under its own power. BC Ferries expects the ship to be in B.C. by late-September, depending on weather.

Finnlines’ Newbuilding Programme proceeds as planned. The second hybrid ro-ro vessel was launched on 30 August 2021 and the keel laying ceremony for the third vessel took place on 31 August. The series of three ro-ro vessels are being built at the Chinese Jinling shipyard located in Nanjing.

Norwegian export credit agency Eksfin (formerly Export Credit Norway and GIEK) is playing a major role in accelerating the ‘green shift’ at sea, providing loan guarantees approaching 1 billion Euro for the construction of 35 eco-friendly vessels over the last four years – including LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT, the world’s most exclusive polar exploration cruise ship recently delivered to French cruise line PONANT by Norwegian shipbuilder VARD.

Cavotec shore power solutions help Port of Marseille to reduce surge in ship emissions in wake of pandemic

Ports across Europe and the world are increasingly seeing shore power as a highly effective way to reduce emissions from ships in port. The problem of ship emissions in ports has intensified in the wake of the pandemic, as cruise ships that previously stayed in ports for a matter of hours or days, stay at the same berths continually running their conventionally-powered engines, thereby increasing emissions of hazardous chemicals and particulate matter.

Port of Kiel: Additional capacity in intermodal cargo traffic

In eco-friendly rail freight transport, the seaport of Kiel is getting additional capacity and faster connections. Since the beginning of September, five new train pairs have been running weekly via the Lehrte MegaHub from Kiel in Alpine transit to Verona in northern Italy. At the Lehrte fast transhipment facility, the freight units are also connected to the destinations Duisburg, Munich and Ludwigshafen. On the occasion of the first train departure from Schwedenkai, Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director at the PORT OF KIEL, said: "The new connection via Hanover Lehrte now gives us the capacity that is needed for an even greater shift of hinterland transport from road to rail."

LNG-fuelled vessels approaching 30% of orders

Industry coalition SEA-LNG recognises significant growth in LNG-fuelled vessel orders in 2021. According to the latest report from Clarksons, LNG-fuelled vessel orders are approaching 30% of Gross Tonnage on order, representing a substantial part of shipping’s overall capacity when these vessels are delivered.

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and Elomatic launched the development of a concept design for “Ammonia-fuel Ready LNG-Fueled Vessel” (ARLFV), which covers the transition to future marine fuel.

EST-Floattech launches new battery designs

The Octopus Series, as the new design platform is called, is set to become the next generation DNV certified battery management system for marine markets. With both High Power and High Energy modules, new, smart and lightweight battery solutions can be installed in virtually any size of vessel. Clients can choose between passive- or active cooling and even forced air- and liquid cooling will become available. Production of the new battery systems is about to start and ‘racks’ become available as of 2022.

AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for August 2021

In August 2021 AS Tallink Grupp transported 389 715 passengers, which is a 14.1% decrease compared to August 2020. The number of cargo units decreased by 3.4% to 28 790 units and the number of passenger vehicles decreased by 18.1% to 78 193 units in the same comparison.

The public offering of Tallink Grupp’s new shares created keen investor interest, the company’s share capital was increased by EUR 34.6 million

Tallink Grupp has announced to the stock exchange the results of the public offering of the new shares of the company, held from 18 August to 1 September 2021, and the company’s decision how the new shares shall be allocated. Based on the decision of the company’s Supervisory Board, altogether 73,687,024 new shares of the company shall be allocated to the investors. As a result of the public offering, the company’s share capital was increased by EUR 34.6 million and the company gained over 4,500 new shareholders.

NYK to Conduct Test of New Lookout Support System for Vessels

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and MTI Co., Ltd. have installed on a trial basis on a ship operated by the NYK Group a prototype of the Automatic Ship Target Recognition System developed in Israel by Orca AI Ltd. Verification started from September 8th.

DFDS has an ambition to launch the first green vessel by 2025

DFDS can accelerate its climate action strategy in an effort to decarbonize the maritime sector sooner than expected.
DFDS has for some time worked to develop a hydrogen ferry. The learnings from this project enables DFDS accelerate part of its climate strategy related to newbuilds and retrofits. Starting with the launch of Project Green Vessel 2025, which will move up ambitions for its first green vessel by 2025.

SINTEF to research ammonia as a green shipping fuel

SINTEF will work on solving research hurdles linked to the use of ammonia as a zero-emission fuel for the shipping sector. The Minister of Climate and Environment for Norway, Sveinung Rotevatn, announced at the end of last week that the project Ammonia Fuel Bunkering Network would receive NOK 89 million through the Green Platform Initiative.

AIDA Cruises wants to reach zero emissions as early as 2040

AIDA Cruises works with partners from research, science and industry to develop innovative solutions and use technologies with the aim of putting the first zero-emission ship into service as early as 2030.
By 2040, ten years before the International Maritime Organization (IMO) climate targets, the cruise company wants to be on track with its fleet in an emission-neutral way. AIDA Cruises is thus making an active contribution to achieving the Paris climate targets and the European Green Deal.

TT-Line and Port of Trelleborg have signed a new ten-year agreement. This means an long-term perspective of the port operations and thus consolidating trheir position as Scandinavia’s largest RoRo port.

Wärtsilä advances carbon capture and storage in maritime as part of LINCCS consortium

Wärtsilä will take a central role in developing maritime carbon capture & storage (CCS) technologies as one of the leading partners in the LINCCS (linking carbon capture and storage) consortium.
The LINCCS project is focused on reducing costs for new carbon storage facilities by 70% and advancing the development of carbon capture technologies in a range of sectors. This week, it was announced that the LINCCS consortium would receive 111m Norwegian kroner to support the funding over the next three years from the Norwegian government’s Green Platform Initiative.

Lloyd’s Register and Inmarsat form industry-first collaboration to develop a remote survey solution

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Inmarsat,have announced an industry-first collaboration between a satellite communications provider and classification society to provide a connectivity solution that will address challenges experienced during remote surveys.

DFDS: acquisition of HSF Logistics Group approved

The EU Commission has approved DFDS’ acquisition of the HSF Logistics Group announced on 26 January 2021.
The closing of the transaction is expected to be completed on 14 September 2021. Information about integration and expected financial impacts of the transaction will be included in the closing announcement.
HSF Logistics Group is one of Europe’s leading cold chain logistics providers to meat producers and other food producers that operate temperature-controlled supply chains.

DeRossi Implements Software System to Streamline Shipbuilding Work Management

DeRossi, the dedicated ship interior outfitting firm, announced it has implemented a new software internally that it will eventually make available to outside interested partners. The new versatile software platform draws upon the company's extensive experience in serving the shipping industry and is being used to help the firm to digitize its workflows.

Fincantieri: Construction of new “Sphere“ class ship for Princess Cruises begins

The steel of the first of two LNG cruise ships for Princess Cruises, a brand within Carnival Corporation, took place in San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine) at Centro Servizi Navali, a company specialized in logistics and production of sheet metal for the Fincantieri yards located in northeastern Italy. The ship will be built in the Monfalcone yard.

Viking Line: City of Turku redeems the terminal in Turku

The City of Turku has redeemed the terminal in Turku owned by Viking Line. The terminal and related facilities are located in an area in the Port of Turku leased by Viking Line.
Under the original lease agreement, the buildings were to be redeemed on December 31, 2025, but since the Port of Turku decided to begin a major refurbishment of the port and its facilities, the City of Turku now redeems the properties.
