Onorato seals charter deal with the Siem Group

What has been rumoured for some time, has now been confirmed: Onorato Armatori has positively negotiated a five-year charter contract for two 4,100-lanemetre ro-ros that the Siem Group recently ordered at Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, a daughter company of the Siem Group.

LE RIF – abandoned?

LE RIF, ex- IMTC, was acquired by a new Moroccan operator – Detroit World Logistic Maritime (DWLM) – in 2016 with a view to upgrading her and putting her into service on the Algeciras-Tangier Med route. She initially went into drydock in Malaga, but after various disputes over the work to be done, and the cost, the vessel was towed to Naples.

Brittany Ferries to charter a Visentini-Class ro-pax for new direct Cork-Santander connection

The direct routes linking the Irish Republic with continental Europe are gaining importance as Brexit uncertainty continues with freight carriers wanting to bypass the UK land bridge. Brittany Ferries has not awaited EU subsidies to join the fray and further expand its network with a direct twice weekly Ireland-Spain connection to start in late April.

Chinese connection for Chilean operators

The semi-submersible heavy-lift carrier SUN SHINE has arrived in Puerto Montt, Chile, with its cargo of four Far East-built ferries. More details are available about the second-hand ships sourced in South Korea. These are LEPTEPU (65.25m x 16m) and the much smaller MAILLEN (32.75m x 7m).

Record numbers for the Port of Kiel

The Port of Kiel in Germany handled 7,407,376 tonnes of cargo in 2017 – a record that was 14.3% higher than the previous year. Much of this growth was related to the new SCA forest products centre which, in its first full year of operation in 2017, handled over 780,000 tonnes.

Belfast’s Harland & Wolff to return WESTPAC EXPRESS to commercial passenger role

Following 16 years of sterling service for the US Marine Corp in the Pacific, the 2001, Austal-built 101m WESTPAC EXPRESS (HSV 676) is scheduled to arrive at the Northern Ireland shipyard of Harland & Wolff on 15 January for work to return the high-speed catamaran to her passenger/vehicle carrying role.
