The photo above shows SETTSU alongside the outfitting quay of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki yard. On 10 March SETTSU will replace the 2003-built YAMATO on the Kobe-Shinmoji route. The latter vessel will subsequently be taken over by buyers Stena RoRo.

Owing to lower than expected demand, P&O Ferries has pulled the plug on its Calais-Tilbury freight-only service operated by the chartered 1,625-lanemetre CAROLINE RUSS. P&O Ferries is also blaming the protracted industrial action of French state railway operator SNCF, but according to the ship’s AIS signal, CAROLINE RUSS already stopped sailing before Christmas.

Hot on the heels of the introduction of STENA ESTRID on the Holyhead-Dublin route, Stena Line has taken delivery of its second E-Flexer on 15 January, exactly two months after the official hand-over of STENA ESTRID by builders CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard.

Fjord1 receives GRIP and FLORØY from Turkey

Fjord1 has taken delivery of GRIP and FLORØY from Cemre and Sefine Shipyard, respectively. GRIP follows the delivery of TUSTNA and is a 399-passenger and 80-car intake hybrid double-ender, while FLORØY is the second of three 84.5m zero-emission double-enders with a capacity for 83 cars and 299 passengers.

New Portuguese expedition cruise line Mystic Cruises’ promises to become a major player in the global expedition cruise vessel market have been further reinforced by placing an order for a further four Explorer Class polar vessels, due for delivery in 2023. The four new vessels have been ordered at a total cost of EUR 286.7 million.

The Hellenic Seaways-controlled NISSOS MYKONOS and NISSOS CHIOS will be officially transferred to sister brand Blue Star Ferries, obtaining a Blue Star Ferries livery during their upcoming drydockings.

Danish media report that the owner of Molslinjen, leading Nordic private equity fund Polaris, has put the company up for sale. Polaris became a shareholder in Molslinjen in 2015.

Croatian state-owned ferry operator Jadrolinija has confirmed it has invested in second-hand tonnage from Greece to renew its fleet.

Ferry traffic between Marseille and Corsica remains blocked due a strike which was initially started by employees of La Méridionale on Thursday 9 January. Members of the CGT trade union who are not employed by La Méridionale are sympathizing with the strikers, affecting Corsica Linea.

On Monday 13 January the first of Stena Line’s E-Flexers, STENA ESTRID, will make her first commercial crossing between Holyhead and Dublin, undertaking the 08:55 sailing from the North Wales port and returning from the Irish capital at 14:50. STENA ESTRID will make two daily return crossings – 08:55 and 20:30 ex Holyhead and 14:50 and 02:15 ex Dublin Port.

One of Japan’s most prolific builders of ferry tonnage, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki shipyard, has launched Hankyu Ferry’s 16,300grt YAMATO. The new YAMATO will be introduced on Hankyu Ferry’s Seto Inland Sea route between Kobe and Shinmoji (Kitakyushu) in June this year.

Wärtsilä customised LNG solution chosen for four next-generation short-sea cargo vessels

Four new next-generation short-sea cargo vessels being built at the WuHu Shipyard in China will feature LNG propulsion and storage systems provided by the technology group Wärtsilä. The ships have been ordered by Wijnne & Barends Chartering based in the Netherlands, an affiliate of the Dutch Spliethoff Group. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in December.

Port of Tallinn 2019 Q4 and full year passenger and cargo flows

In 2019 Q4, 5.6 million tonnes of cargo and 2.3 million passengers passed through the harbours of Port of Tallinn. Compared to the same period of previous year, the cargo volume increased by 12.3% mainly due to liquid bulk. The passenger volume increased by 1.2% and the number of ship calls grew by 2.8% to 1893 calls.

Port of Tallinn new cruise terminal will be built by YIT

Port of Tallinn has signed an agreement with YIT Eesti AS for the construction of new cruise terminal in Tallinn Old City Harbour. The value of the contract is EUR 13.7 million. New cruise terminal will be completed in July 2021.

SOL becomes new majority shareholder in Scanlog

Svenska Orient Linien, SOL, becomes new majority owner in the Swedish logistics company Scandinavian Logistics Partners, Scanlog. Until now, the shipping company has had a 20 percent holding in the company, but now it is expanding its ownership to just over 50 percent.
