CLdN to start direct Zeebrugge-Santander service

As of mid-September, CLdN will further expand its offering to the Iberian peninsula with a twice weekly Zeebrugge-Santander ro-ro service.

Record passenger numbers for Eckerö Line

Eckerö Line, serving the Helsinki to Tallinn route with the 2001-built FINLANDIA, has released its passenger statistics for the period January-June and it shows a 15% increase compared to the same period last year, ending at 822,000 passengers. For the month of June, the company also broke its record, carrying 169,515 passengers, bringing Eckerö Line’s market share to around 19%.

Assembly of LNG-powered COSTA SMERALDA started at Meyer Turku

On 4 July the assembly of Costa Cruises’ 182,700gt COSTA SMERALDA officially started at the Meyer Turku shipyard. The cruise ship, which will be delivered in October 2019, will be followed by a sister ship 2021.

Record quarter for P&O Ferries’ Zeebrugge-Hull lo-lo service

P&O Ferries’ thrice weekly Zeebrugge-Hull lo-lo service that supplements its daily ro-pax service operated by the 2,230-lanemetre PRIDE OF BRUGES and PRIDE OF YORK, enjoyed record carryings during the second quarter.

All four Baleària Eco Class vessels now in service

ECO AIRE, the fourth and last Eco Class passenger-only ferry built for Baleària by Spanish Astilleros Gondán has been delivered and is already in service on the Ibiza to Formentera route.

2018 second quarter statistics for Tallink Grupp – record number of passengers in the month of June

According to the figures, Tallink transported more passengers this June than it has ever done in this month previously. The total number of passengers transported on all of the company’s routes in June was 989,445, a 1.4% increase over the same month in 2017. The month also saw new passenger records on the Estonia-Finland route with 512,077 passengers, a 1.0% increase compared to the same period in 2017, and on the Estonia-Sweden route with 101,249 passengers transported, a 3.9% increase over the same period last year.

T. Mariotti and Damen start partnership and announce two cruise ship LoIs for Seabourn

The Italian luxury cruise shipbuilding company, T. Mariotti, and Damen Shipyards Group have started a new partnership, combining their expertise and facilities to focus on the construction of cruise vessels under the new common brand MARIOTTI DAMEN Cruise. Following the announcement of the partnership, it was revealed that a letter of intent had been signed with Seabourn for the construction of two ultra-luxury expedition cruise vessels.

Germany’s Phoenix Reisen buys Holland America Line’s PRINSENDAM

It has taken four years but the wait has been worth it as German cruise line Phoenix Reisen gets the vessel it wants for its fleet expansion – Holland America Line’s PRINSENDAM. The 39,051-gross-ton PRINSENDAM is the ideal fit for the German operator and will join the existing four-ship fleet of Phoenix Risen on 1 July 2019.

Fjord1’s HORGEFJORD delivered

The second of the two all-electric/plug-in ferries built by Turkish Tersan shipyard for Fjord1 has been delivered and is now on her way to Norway, expected to arrive in a couple of weeks. Built to a Multi Maritime design, the 3,500-gross-ton HORGEFJORD has a 399-passenger and 120-car capacity. With a 112.5m length, she is slightly shorter than the 122.1m MØKSTRAFJORD, equally built by Tersan to service the same Krokeide-Hufthamar route. MØKSTRAFJORD was delivered earlier this year.

Pentland Ferries vents its frustration with the delay in implementing the Scottish Government’s passenger subsidy

The small, family-owned Scottish ferry operator Pentland Ferries has gone public with its frustration in the delay in implementing the Scottish Government’s passenger subsidy. The operator says that they want the Government’s RET (road equivalent tariff) scheme to reduce passenger fares to go ahead as soon as possible and are just waiting on confirmation that the scheme is legal.

ORIANA set to leave P&O Cruises fleet in August 2019

With two new large cruise vessels set to join its fleet in 2020 and 2022 respectively, British cruise line P&O Cruises was always going to divest itself of smaller, ageing tonnage. The company announced that its 69,840-gross-ton ORIANA would be leaving the fleet in August 2019 following her last cruise for the company, a Norway and North Cape cruise from Southampton, departing 22 July 2019.

Stena Line “fully committed” to Fishguard ferry terminal in Wales

Stena Line has said that it is “fully committed to supporting and developing” its Fishguard ferry terminal following serious concerns about the Swedish company’s future intentions at the port after it confirmed on 20 June that it would not be investing in a new GBP 5 million linkspan at the port. The work in installing the new linkspan would have closed the ferry port for three months in early 2019. Local councillors described it a “worrying time” for the town.

Norled wins important contracts in Sognefjord

Norwegian fjord ferries operator Norled has been awarded two important contracts in Sognefjord in Sogn og Fjordane county. The contract covers two ferry services; the first one between Mannheller and Fodnes, the second is the triangular Hella-Vangsnes-Dragsvik route.

Damen embarks on Danish full electric public transport project for Arriva

Damen Shipyards Group recently signed a contract with leading multinational public transport company Arriva Danmark for five fully-electric ferries, known as the Damen Ferry 2306 E3. Damen E3 vessels are designed with the philosophy of being environmentally friendly, efficient in operation and economically viable. Arriva will operate the ferries for its client, Danish public transport agency MOVIA, in the country’s capital city Copenhagen.

Survitec supplies lifesaving essentials to Wightlink's new flagship vessel, VICTORIA OF WIGHT

Safety solutions provider Survitec has been selected by Wightlight, one of the UK’s largest domestic ferry operators, to supply lifesaving essentials to their new flagship vessel, VICTORIA OF WIGHT. Included within Wightlink’s 45 multi-million-pound investment in the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route, the VICTORIA OF WIGHT is powered solely through hybrid energy, and can carry up to 278 cars and more than a thousand passengers.

Brodosplit signed new contracts with Italian Fincantieri

Under the Agreement on long-term business and technical cooperation, Brodogradevna industrija Split and Italian group Fincantieri have signed two new contracts for the construction of fitted sections (grand blocks) for mega cruisers, which are being built in Italian shipyards.

Scanship awarded clean ship system contract for SILVER DAWN by Fincantieri

Scanship Holding ASA has through its subsidiary Scanship AS, been awarded contract by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the supply of a total clean ship system for SILVER DAWN. The ship, to be built for Silversea Cruises, will enter service in 2021.

Tallink starts offering Alipay payment solution to customers

Tallink is the first major Estonian company to start providing its customers with the option of paying by means of the world’s largest electronic payment solution, Alipay. Starting from July it is possible to make payments on the company’s shuttles MEGASTAR and STAR on the Tallinn-Helsinki route using the popular electronic payment solution. The primary target group of AliPay with its almost 870 million users worldwide is the ever-increasing segment of Chinese tourists.

ClassNK releases amendments to class rules

Classification society ClassNK has announced that it released amendments to its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships on 29 June 2018.
