Maelir AB acquires Rafael’s 17.1% share in Viking Line

In a EUR 33.3 million deal, Maelir AB has acquired the 17.1% shareholdership Rafael held in Viking Line Abp. Following this transaction, Maelir AB controls 17.75% of the shares in Viking Line Abp, thereby becoming the largest individual shareholder of the company.

French luxury expedition cruise line Ponant took delivery of LE DUMONT D’URVILLE from Norway’s Vard on 14 June on schedule. LE DUMONT D’URVILLE is the fourth vessel in Ponant’s six-ship Explorers series and the ninth vessel in its fleet.

Ahead of the 26 July introduction of COLOR HYBRID, Color Line has sold its Sandefjord-Strömstad stalwart BOHUS to Tnitsea Shipping, a subsidiary of Madeira-based North Bay Maritimos Transportes Lda, the company behind Red Star Ferries. BOHUS shall be handed over to her new owners before 30 August at the latest.

The January 2020 sulphur cap on fuels and the target for reducing ship greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2050 have been extensively analysed in terms of the impact on oceangoing shipping, however the same does not apply to ferry and coastal shipping, especially when potential problems will have a direct impact on the public and all of the Greek islands.

Moby Group Q1 financial results

Moby Group released its financial results for the first quarter of 2019, showing a 14.5% increase in revenues, but with a net loss of EUR 17.1 million. The sale of AURELIA and HARTMUT PUSCHMANN contributed with about EUR 15 million. EBITDA ended positive at EUR 20.1 million, compared to a loss last year of EUR 15.6 million. Passenger numbers increased with 1.8% in the period, while lanemetres shrunk with 11.4%.

Hydrogen attracts attention as a potential future carbon-free fuel

Hydrogen is abundant on earth, but not in its pure form. To be able to use it as a clean, carbon-free fuel, man has to develop feasible ways of mass-producing it from sea water using electrolysis, powered by surplus wind or solar energy. Many technical challenges have to be overcome before hydrogen can cover the world’s fuel needs. DNV GL is involved in several research projects to help overcome these challenges.

VARD taps TMC for Viking Cruises compressors

KNUD E. HANSEN is proud to announce its latest design, a 110-metre Wind Cruise Vessel. Tallink Grupp connects first two vessels to shore power at Port of Stockholm in a bid to reduce environmental impact

Tallink Grupp has this week started using shore power to provide electricity for two of its vessels, SILJA SERENADE and SILJA SYMPHONY, while they are alongside in port to reduce the environmental impact of the vessels and to minimise air pollution in the Nordic capital cities the company’s vessels visit. SILJA SYMPHONY and SILJA SERENADE, sister ships operating on the Helsinki-Stockholm route, have been piloting use of the shore power connection facility since February this year and are the two first vessels to be connected to the new facility aiming to minimize the environmental impact from ships within the Baltic Sea region.

New Study Finds Negligible Environmental Impact From Accumulated Scrubber Wash Water In Ports

The Clean Shipping Alliance (CSA) 2020 has welcomed the preliminary results of an independent study presented by CE Delft, a research organisation in the Netherlands specialising in environmental issues, indicating that accumulated concentrations of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS, or “scrubbers”) wash water components are at very low levels and well below applicable regulatory limits.

Leanships project with Wärtsilä & partners achieves 3.5% fuel savings for ships with CPPs

The technology group Wärtsilä, the Netherlands based Maritime Research Institute MARIN and Italian ship owner Grimaldi, have together successfully designed an Energy Saving Device (ESD), suitable for use by ships with Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs). Following model tests, and subsequent sea trials with Grimaldi’s GRANDE PORTOGALLO, a 165 metres long Pure Car & Truck Carrier, fuel efficiency gains of 3.5 percent were confirmed.

Royal approval for Bolidt cruise contract

The installation of decking solutions from Dutch company Bolidt aboard one of the largest cruise ships ever to be built in Germany has received a royal seal of approval, after King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands witnessed a contract signing at the Rostock facilities of yard group MV Werften. The agreement, formalized during a trade delegation visit, provides for Bolidt to supply a total of 17,000m2 of its innovative synthetic systems to the first Global class cruise ship for Hong Kong-based Genting Group’s Dream Cruises, which is already under construction.

Rebranded DFDS funnels: Maritime look and clear communication of the name

DFDS is testing a new funnel look. It includes the use of our name rather than the logo and tests a blue wave that aims to underline the maritime nature of our business.
