Interferry voices fire safety cencerns at IMO
Work to improve ro-pax fire safety has become a major area of activity for Interferry following several high-profile incidents in recent years, and this was again underlined by our key interventions at the fifth annual session of the IMO’s Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) Sub-Committee, which took place from March 12-16.
CARNIVAL HORIZON handed over to Carnival Cruise Line
On 28 March, Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone handed over CARNIVAL HORIZON to Carnival Cruise Line, becoming the 26th ship in the CCL fleet.

Fincantieri 2017 full year financial result
Record high revenues, exceeding EUR 5 billion, (13% improvement vs FY 2016), EBITDA at EUR 341 million (+28% vs FY 2016), Adjusted Net income at EUR 91 million (+52%) and Net income at EUR 53 million (+279%).
Baleària 2017 full year financial results
Revenues up by 10% to EUR 362.6 million. EBITDA up by 3% to EUR 81.5 million. The order for a 56,000gt ro-pax from LaNaval has officially been cancelled, Baleària confirmed.
Færgen 2017 full year financial results
Færgen reported its strongest year to date with a turnover of DKK 1.06 billion, an increase of 4.3% compared to the DKK 1.02 billion in 2016. The end result ended at DKK 124 million for the year, up from DKK 44 million in 2016.
UPDATED: Damen grows its shipyard business in Romania
UPDATE:
In January, the Romanian Government opposed that Damen would acquire Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s (DSME) 51% share in Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI). An agreement has now been reached between the Romanian Government and Damen whereby the Dutch shipbuilding group will grant the Romanian state an extra 2% stake in the yard. Damen will retain a 49% stake, which means that the yard has de facto been nationalised.
Jadrolinija releases concept design for its next-generation domestic ro-pax
Last week Shippax reported that Jadrolinija would drop the design provided by Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting (RMDC) for a 1,500-passenger, 200-car ro-pax.
Interferry security committee urges France to pause screening plan
Following the Interferry Security Committee meeting in February, Interferry have written to the French administration regarding their plans for the on-board security screening of ferry passengers between vehicle decks and the accommodation areas. In Interferry's view, vehicle decks are not a safe environment to harbour large number of passengers in transition to the stairways – such an accumulation would increase the risk of accidents, inhibit effective evacuation and limit the scope for protection from an armed attack.
Italian antitrust authority sanctions Moby and Tirrenia
The two companies, both part of the Onorato Armatori Group, have been fined EUR 29 million by the Italian antitrust authority for alleged abuse of their dominant position in the ro-ro market between the Italian mainland and Sardinia – a fine the Onorato Armatori Group will appeal against.
A Belgian company presents “smart” trailer tarpaulins against unwanted visitors
At Sioen in Ardooie, Belgium, the PASSAnT project was introduced to the press yesterday, 26 March. PASSAnT is a Belgian-Dutch alliance that develops a high-tech security solution for ports in partnership with Sioen.
3i Group plc sells large slice of Scandlines to British consortia
In a transaction worth EUR 1.7 billion, Scandlines has announced that its largest owner, the UK-based 3i Group, has sold a majority stake in the company to First State Investments and Hermes Investment Management – two long-term infrastructure investors representing predominantly European pension funds.
Stena Line will replace ELISBETH RUSS by BORE BAY
In October last year, Stena Line took the 1,625-lanemetre ELISABETH RUSS on a six-month charter for the then newly-created thrice weekly Gdynia-Nynäshamn route. Stena Line confirmed to Shippax that ELISABETH RUSS is due to be replaced on 9 April by the 1,511-lanemetre BORE BAY which will be chartered for 12 months.
ECSA urges parties at IMO to conclude on ambitious GHG reduction targets
ECSA has always maintained that shipping has to contribute substantially to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and will always be committed to most proactive and realistic reduction aspirations.
A new cooperation for climate-smart transports launched
A new cooperation, ‘Electromobility for Shipping’, was launched on 21 March in Stockholm, with the aim of strengthening work towards a climate-smart maritime sector, a cooperation that also has great potential for Swedish exports of environmentally friendly technologies.
Fred. Olsen Express announces name for its latest acquisition
The Canary Island specialist Fred. Olsen has announced that its latest acquisition, the Austal Auto Express 113m catamaran LEONORA CHRISTINA, will be renamed as the BUGANVILLA EXPRESS.
Naviera Armas announces VOLCAN DE TENO schedules
The Incat-built wave piercing catamaran VOLCAN DE TENO, fresh out of drydock and subsequent sea trials, is scheduled to enter service for Naviera Armas between Morro Jable (Fuerteventura) and Las Palmas on 28 March with a daily roundtrip, continuing on to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on key dates.
World’s largest cruise ship enters service
The world’s largest cruise ship, SYMPHONY OF THE SEAS, was handed over to her owners Royal Caribbean International at the STX France Shipyard in Saint Nazaire on 23 March. The 228,081gt vessel takes over the title of biggest cruise ship in the world from fleet mate HARMONY OF THE SEAS, but only just as the latter is 226,96gt. Both vessels, however, have the same passenger capacity – 5,518 double occupancy and 6,680 total passenger capacity.
Tirrenia CIN will charter Hellenic Seaways’ 1,845-passenger and 2,050-lanemetre ARIADNE. The ship is being prepared for her new role in Italian domestic waters and will emerge in a Tirrenia livery when leaving Perama during the first or second week of April.
GRAND SPRING to join Anek Lines fleet?
According to Greek sources, Anek Lines is close to acquiring the GRAND SPRING from Chinese interests. Shippax understands that a Greek crew has been sent to China to possibly bring the ship to Europe.
Janek Stalmeister steps down as Tallink Grupp’s CEO
The Supervisory Board of AS Tallink Grupp has appointed Mr Paavo Nõgene as the new CEO of the Tallink Grupp, taking over the helm from Janek Stalmeister who remains in the Group as a Member of the Management Board.
Hurtigruten and Havila Kystruten AS are the winners of the ‘Kystruten’ tender
Hurtigruten, the incumbent operator of the eleven-ship coastal express line linking Bergen in the south with Kirkenes in the north of Norway, together with Per Sævik’s Havila Kystruten, have won the tender for the ten-year ‘Kystruten’ concession.
